Three areas co
me to mind when I think of detoxification programs, all three come with health and wellness benefits:
Detoxification of the skin
detoxification through heat therapy - mud wraps and detox spa baths, sauna and steam room
Internal detoxification and cleansing
through specific diets with or without liquids, sometimes assisted with vitamins
Detoxification through movement and exercise
any invigorating exercise that promotes a healthy sweat, such as jogging, biking, dancing, basketball, racquetball, tennis etc.
Overall, dieting, internal cleansing or fasting can be part of a spiritual practice or simply be a simple ‘cleansing of the house', a spring cleaning or an autumn maintenance of the body, something you do once or twice a year.
Detox at a Spa
Many destination or day spas offer all kinds of detoxification programs. For detoxification of the skin, seaweed or mud baths and wraps are proven to draw toxins out of the skin, which is the body's biggest organ. Saunas, steam rooms or Turkish baths essentially achieve the same results.
At a health spa of your choice you can also achieve detoxification through massage, for example sports massage, deep tissue or lymphatic drainage massage. Muscles store toxins, so by thoroughly getting those layers of muscles and tissues kneaded and by gently mobilizing and moving the joints, the muscle tissue will release those stored toxins, if you follow up after the massage with a glass of 8 - 16 oz of plain drinking water. The toxins can now be flushed out of the body.
At destination spas you will be able to find liquid juice diets, diet programs with fruits and vegetables, wheatgrass diets and other cleansing programs. The choices are many! The concept of juice diets is to flush out the intestines, free them of old excess food particles, which are a mere burden for the body and make it feel sluggish. The next step is to introduce healthy nutrients to the body to revitalize our tired systems and invigorate our senses.
Detox at Home
Really exciting is the fact that you can easily detox at home as well without having to spend a lot of money. Seaweed and mud baths are usually powders that can be simply added to hot bath water. You can also add detox bath salts in the same way.
Hydrotherapy can be done at home as well. By taking hot and cold showers, the circulatory system gets stimulated to circulate blood through the kidneys, bladder and liver for example. Additionally, increased circulation through hot and cold water brings the blood to the surface of the skin and improves skin tone. Start with a hot shower, the switch to cold, then repeat this process 2 to 3 times. The first round is a bit challenging, round 2 and 3 are easy to do. It is really very simple
to do and produces great results!
A fresh juice diet is also something you can easily do at home! In order to achieve the full health benefits, you would need to get a juicer and juice daily for the time you can set aside to cleanse those bowels - any time between 3 - 7 days. A-B-C as in apple, beets and carrots aid in detoxification and this refreshing drink tastes great!
What are toxins exactly?
Simply put, any food ingredients ingested in excess, something the body doesn't really need to function, any ingredient with a very low or non existent nutritional value, for example coffee, tea, alcohol, too much processed or canned foods, too much fast food, too many fats, too many carbohydrates. Also note, that if a food item is too complex, the body might have a hard time digesting it properly and therefore can't eliminate it right away. An example for a food item being too complex, take an otherwise very nutritious food like milk, which should really only consist of 2 - 3 ingredients, but often has up to 30. This is absolutely not necessary and might be rather a burden for the body's elimination process than healthy. So check the label on your milk container for content.
Detoxification through exercise can be achieved at home, at a gym, Yoga studio, outdoors, at the beach etc. This can be fun and exhilarating and has all added benefits of cardiovascular exercise and toning those limp and tired muscles! You can work out dancing, jogging, doing Bikram Yoga in a heated studio, playing ball games, tennis or biking. Any exercise, which makes you break out in a sweat will do, a vital part being to drink a lot of water with it.
After detoxification you might feel more alive, have increased concentration and clarity of mind, sense a groundedness you might have lacked before, feel an increase in energy and feel good about yourself.
Let's do it!
